"EcoFusion: Bridging Nature and Urban Life

Mon Apr 25 2022

Inspired by Taiwanese author Sanmao, my work addresses the impact of modernization on nature and human life. In her metaphor of "plastic children," Sanmao depicts how synthetic materials and urbanization have disconnected people, especially children, from nature, leading to environmental degradation and ecological imbalance.

As an artist and designer, I believe design should not only merge function and aesthetics but also foster a dialogue with society and the environment. My work proposes a sustainable design approach that aims to break down the barriers between nature and urban spaces. By integrating architecture with plant life, I seek to create harmonious environments where people and nature coexist.

ICON - Beauty's Burden

Fri Dec 1st 2023

The inspiration comes from the story of the heroine in the movie "Notting Hill" who diets for a long time to maintain her figure. From a semiotic perspective, mainstream aesthetics affects the self-cognition of individuals through the reinforcement and dissemination of visual media.

In order to criticize this phenomenon, I exaggerate these symbolic features and design symbolic wearable clothing. Wearing this outfit and walking in the Notting Hill Bookshop, I frequently get stuck in the corridors and shelves, or accidentally knock things off, which satirizes the limitations of mainstream aesthetics and reveals its obstruction to real life.

Age-Friendly Community Service Spaces

Fri Jan 18 2022

As China faces increasing challenges from an ageing population, improving urban elder care and addressing the shortage of appropriate facilities has become a pressing issue. In Shanghai's Shanggang New Village, elderly residents suffer from health conditions linked to historical industrial pollution, while also dealing with outdated infrastructure and insufficient recreational spaces. In response, I designed an age-friendly community using modular shipping containers to create flexible, multi-functional spaces tailored to the elderly’s needs. These include spaces like chess rooms, shared gardens, and tea rooms, all encouraging social interaction and enhancing their quality of life.

The core of this project is its adaptability and rapid implementation, as container modules can be easily assembled and reconfigured to accommodate different activities. This solution not only addresses the immediate need for activity spaces but also modernises the ageing community infrastructure. Through thoughtful design, it fosters a vibrant, supportive environment that promotes well-being and a sense of belonging for the elderly residents.

Media has unmatched power. This project speculates that by 2050, modern society will be so permeated and dominated by entertainment that escaping from the power gaze of Hollywood will be largely impossible in everyday life. The work analyses film and theory to deploy the power of digital imaging media to “cinematise” values.

In the early 20th century, Hollywood emerged as the center of film production and has remained the mainstream force throughout different eras, wielding enormous and global influence. With power at its disposal, cinema has played a critical role in shaping values through the "cinematization" of ideologies. Directors use the camera's perspective and shot selection to shape how viewers perceive scenes and characters, thus exercising influence and control over the audience. Simultaneously, the reality narrated through "film language" reflects the creator’s intentions, affecting the cognition and behavior of individuals, and guiding mass value orientation. Gradually, this ideology spreads and encompasses the globe.

By 2050, Hollywood directors are referred to as "Cinematic Leaders," using dTigital media to shape ideologies aligned with the interests of the film unions across cities. The Hollywood Walk of Fame unveiling ceremony, as a symbolically significant event, annually celebrates and unveils new film stars, promoting and embedding specific ideologies and values while reinforcing social hierarchies. Through the expression of this single day's event, an entire narrative architecture emerges, making Hollywood in 2050 a space rich with storytelling and legibility.

"Transparent Background".

I try to make a cape, using a transparent background pattern in Photoshop. That way people in the city who want to be invisible can wear cloaks, and those who don't need to be invisible don't. People who are being photographed will have pixel blocks on their heads to form screen pixels, with the entire city as the backdrop, while those who are not being photographed can have bad pixels on their heads so that they don't interfere with the overall "screen play" and can hide themselves.

This proposal aims to establish a mobile temporary exhibition system, facilitating art institutions in the efficient updating, preservation, and collection of artworks. For students in art academies, the regular rotation and collection of exhibits is a common practice. By creating a sustainable space for exhibitions, education, and scientific outreach, this plan not only broadens students' horizons and enhances their professional skills but also optimizes the use of limited space, promoting environmental sustainability.

The core concept of this proposal is "Integration of Exhibition and Learning, Harmony of Knowledge and Practice, Interactive Engagement." The project focuses on upgrading and renovating the Earth-Sheltered Art Museum at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, along with its surrounding facilities, to better serve students and the broader public. Through an immersive and interactive design, the exhibition integrates display and educational functions, systematically curating the academy's flagship disciplines in a more scientific manner. Additionally, the proposal provides dedicated spaces for the restoration of aged artworks, featuring restoration demonstrations and experiments to ensure their preservation and conservation.

Rebirth  -  Transformation of tailor shop Thu Dec 8 2022

In Guangzhou's old towns, buildings have either become tourism resources due to their historical value, or have become decaying shells due to their location and lack of functionality, or have become the short-lived vanity of curiosity seekers on social media. Timelessness and traces have become disposable, and under the impact of tourism and social media, they are faced with the choice of being reborn as commercial or decaying. Historically, architectural projects in China have been dismantled into woodwork, earthwork, stonework, and lacquerwork, with architects becoming closer to tailors and carpenters.

Craftsmanship is both the tool and the result, and because of its scale and interface, it strongly suggests the way it once existed and its inclination. Architecture, on the other hand, has become generic and banal under the onslaught of modernisation, and it has lost its tendency to wrap itself around and shape the subject. This time, we focus on the use of architecture, on the traces of humanity in architecture, on the remnants of lifestyle and culture, and on the link between architecture and craftsmanship.

Seeds of TomorrowFri Jul 19 2022

The issue of youth education in the Rocinha favela is particularly severe. Education should be a key tool to improve the lives of residents, but over the past 30 years, the quality of schooling has deteriorated significantly. Due to worsening security, schools frequently close during riots, leaving nearly 5,000 students unable to attend. Even in calmer periods, teachers are reluctant to come regularly, and classes are often limited. Despite widespread absenteeism, students are still promoted to the next grade, further diminishing the quality of education.

In response to this challenge, I propose transforming an abandoned factory into a modern kindergarten, offering children a safe and stable learning environment. This project aims to improve not only the physical space but also to create opportunities for children to engage in activities that support their early development. By enhancing the facilities and optimizing the design, this project will provide hope and a brighter future for the community.

Tie-dyeing was called "Jiaohua" in ancient times and is an ancient textile dyeing technique in China. Tie-dyeing generally uses cotton white cloth or cotton and linen blended white cloth as raw materials, and the dye is mainly plant indigo.

So we designed a large exhibition with Bai ethnic group tie-dyeing culture, which includes five exhibition halls. Through the display design of these five exhibition halls, the audience can fully understand the long history, production process, color charm, role in Bai ethnic group life and modern innovative applications of Bai ethnic group tie-dyeing technique, allowing people to deeply appreciate the preciousness and beauty of this intangible cultural heritage from different dimensions.

Product packaging design
- Hengshan Herb Lamb
Wed Aug 02 2023

This is a rural poverty alleviation project I have done before. Shaanxi Hengshan Vanilla Beef is a Shaanxi cuisine full of local characteristics. It originated from Hengshan District, Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, and uses beef raised on local natural grasslands as the main ingredient. I designed a unique packaging for this mutton, incorporating the traditional Shaanxi paper-cutting style to enhance the cultural sense. At the same time, the mutton is divided into sections on the inner packaging bag so that customers can understand which part of the sheep they are buying belongs to. When customers buy it, they feel that it is a gift from the Shaanxi grasslands, conveying the uniqueness of the product and the sentiment of helping farmers.
